Basic Design Idea

(Click on an image to see it more clearly, then click the back arrow)
This is my original design idea for the layout of my magaz
ine, it is very basic but I wanted to give myself some rough guidelines of which to follow. I chose to have the masthead in the top left corner as this is the first place people look when they begin to read and therefore the magazine name will hopefully become well known. Also my research into existing media presented me with this typical convention of the masthead being left aligned.

I also chose to have a 'featuring' section the top of the page as I have researched layouts of other magazines such as NME and taken the idea from there.

Developing Design Idea One

My first developing design idea has a grey background as I have not yet produced my images that I will be using. I have chosen to have the issue number and date considerably smaller than the masthead so as it does not overpower it. Also after researching existing music magazines I discovered that they all have a barcode, a lot of them in the bottom right hand corner. This is why I decided to add a barcode.

Developing Design Idea Two

In my second developing design idea I have changed the masthead font to a stencil type font because I think it needs a different font type to the rest of the text so as it stands out and people begin to recognise it as a logo. I have also changed the colour of the main story strapline to red as I think it stands out more than the purple, although I am experimenting with different colours I will not be sure on my colour scheme until I have decided on my main image because then I can decide which colours are most effective in contrast with the colours of the image. I also added the ‘WIN WIN TICKETS TO’ text to attract the audience to buy the magazine so as they are in with a chance of winning the tickets.

Developing Design Idea Three

My third developing design idea has now got a background image of which I chose from numerous images I took during a photo shoot organised at my friend’s house, consisting of people from our school. I also chose to have red and green as my main colours as they are contrasting colours, stand out and are appealing to the eye. I also chose to move the ‘featuring’ section to the bottom of the page as I found that it was overpowering the main images the focus. Furthermore I have changed the font type of my masthead after doing research into the font that most appealed to my target audience (see textual analysis and target audience page).

Developing Design Idea Four

(Click on an image to see it more clearly, then click the back arrow)

In my fourth developing design idea I added more images to the featuring section and added a space for a strapline at the top of the page. I also changed the colour scheme to red, yellow and blue because I found that the red and green looked too Christmassy and looked as though it was from the wrong season. Furthermore I changed the background image because I felt that the second one more directly addressed the audience as she is looking directly at the camera and therefore also at the audience.
